2. Trust the Process

The Premise

I took this picture on my birthday this year. I was working in Istanbul, surrounded by symbols of centuries past, the breeze of the entrancing Bosphorous, and the sounds of the modern city. And as we started the day’s work, with a group of 25 people, I realized I had forgotten the bell I use to gather the attention of the room into one shared conversation.

Without it, I feel a bit lost. And so I went hunting, and found this one, stable and elegant, and with the most delightful, light, resonant sound.

Every time I rang it, the participants heeded it with curiosity, their attention filling the room.

Since listening is a core aspect of most of the work I do, I followed the effortless change of rhythm with wonder.

What role did the sound of that bell make to the quality of the group’s dialogue? I don’t know, but I do feel as if the bell found me to tell me a story about just that.
